Hi Everyone. I am finally moving to the farm in December (Hazeley #12051). Want to get a guideline on what equipment I will need. I pretty much have LOS to most AP's in the Northern suburbs. Most LOS nodes are between 20 and 25Km. I will take pics the weekend and add them to my node. What equipment do you recommend for this link?
Mikrotik Netmetal with 30dB 45 deg Slant dish, R4639.80 incl VAT (per side)
There any specific reason for this equipment specifically. Does the 45 degree vs normal make a difference? And then why the netmetal over the basebox?
Still getting my head around all this. So just want to plan everything right.
45deg helps with noise isolation and the netmetal has better power output than a basebox, can run AC and has aluminium enclosure with shielding. Would say Stiaan has this spot on. Dont skimp on equipment when it comes to long range links.
Netmetal vs Netbox 911. Arent they like the same thing hardware related just the one has plastic case and the othet a metal case? Cuz RB is exactly same inside and price tag is R1000 cheaper
Can you please give links to the equipment on Miro/Scoop. I see the 45 deg dish is Ubiquiti and the Netmetal is Mikrotik? Will that work?
Also if you want to go cheap route. Basebox 912+30dbi UBNT dish second hand around R1500 so R3000 both sides. But then you wont sync at very high speeds example: 60-90mbps with 90%ccq but you should have decent link if you arent gna run OSPF or host any clients then that would work aswell
Yes it will work you can mix them as RB is most imporant thing just make sure you connect to a other mikoritik device. But majority ppl use UBNT dishes with mikrotik rbs
Okay that's good to know. R9k is a bit much at the moment for the netmetal+dish x2. Think I will keep an eye out for the basebox/netbox in the classifieds. I firstly just want to get connected, and then hopefully encourage others in my area. Hopefully there is enough interest and I can relay towards Paarl and/or Malmesbury as well. Thumbs crossed. Got till December to look for equipment though. Another thing, you said you can't do Mikrotik - Ubiquiti, but I assume you can do something like Netmetal - Basebox?
The rbs jst need to match each other thats all not the dishes if that makes sense
No its not the same... The netmetal has an higher power output thus can make longer links. MUCH better shielding. Cant compare a netbox to a netmetal...
With the combination of distance and radio noise, don't go skimpy, will cost you dearly in the long run
This will be what you are up against (LHS = all AP's, RHS = CTWUG AP's):
Hey @Jypels and @Stiaanm sound interesting ....... think of changing then my two main links to this equipment ....
Less noise and so or what do you guys say .... hence we need our links running to KFN the best that it can be because of the little incoming connections
Think you should give me a WhatsApp @Donny
