Adding a Client to your Sector (Access Point) Document

Hi all, I have created a rough guide on how to add a client to your Sector, unfortunately the Wiki doesn’t allow me to upload the document as it has a built-in IP Calculator tool which relies on Excel Makro’s.

For those who are interested I have shared the document and it can be downloaded via the Wug network on Adding a Client to your Sector.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Added Windows Subnet Calculator application.

Hi firestarter, nice guide but you might want to include routing aswell from the core RB else traffic wont leave the highsite…

also the rules you have linked to are for Ctwug owned highsites and not privately owned highsites.

@Jypels, thanks for the feedback.

Will leave this off for now as the core might or might not be running OSPF.

Where do I find the rules for the Privately owned high sites? Could you perhaps post a link.

There are no rules as for how many clients are allowed and the signal limit. But private sites should copy ctwug site rules.

This was my assumption as I couldn’t find any rules anywhere specifically dedicated to privately owned high sites.

Ogon’s wording I think is coming out wrong… They should try and keep to those rules but we cannot enforce those rules on privately owned equipment not running ospf…But yes best standard is to follow the rules

its irrelevant if it is running ospf or not. It will still need to be routed through to the closest ospf device broadcasting an area range even if that range is broadcasted from a different node.

There are no rules for private sites when connecting clients, its up to the area admin to connect them. So basically they can connect 50 clients to a sector with a signal of -84.

@Jypels, could you please help with the wording of this? Just edit my second post and add to it then I will update the document on my side.

Yeah sure @Firestarter. I’ll do so tommorow morning. Just came back from night out with family. Also gives me time to think about how to phrase it correctly that will be easy to understand.

Thanks for your efforts @Firestarter glad to see there are more wuggers that are actively involved for the right reasons

Thanks Jypels, much appreciated

Also, I dont actually know what I am doing just yet, only joined CTwug in October 2016 and I went a little too big too quick. Mikrotik is new to me, had to learn the language and figure stuff out with a lot of help from Big Chief @Ogon.

For those who downloaded this document earlier today, please re-download it. I made a mistake on the Subnet Calculator page, the Sector I.P is not supposed to have a /xx in front of it. Document has been updated on my side. I have also added a link to a Subnet Calculator application which if I remember correctly @Gekido uploaded some time back before the data loss.

Some suggestions to add on to this:

  • Client to reset his/her RB to “no configuration” - in terminal on the RB type /system reset-configuration no-defaults=yes (saves lots of headaches)
  • Naming convention!!!

Another easy way to get the client-side config (effectively copy & paste): http://stuff.dade.ctwug.za.net/wugconf.cgi

Looks like there will never be a final time, the knowledge keeps on coming in so I’ll keep updating.

Would a Wiki Page not be a better idea then?
