AirControl Server

Hi all,

I have set up a Ubiquiti AirControl Server running on the CTWUG Network but I will soon add an Internet Static IP for those over achievers that would like to check their equipment from work/overseas,etc.

I have added a few devices from Parow, Plattekloof, West Beach, Dolphin Beach (New Site) & Milnerton Rugby area for testing purposes.

This is running on a Server and is online 24/7 with battery backup power. The idea around this is to get area Admins/Helpers from all areas that are running UBNT devices to add devices. I can assign Monitor only or Control rights to people from different areas depending on what your role in said area is. The key selling feature for me was the fact that I can do mass Firmware updates at a scheduled date/time to keep user impact of dropping links to a minimal.

Some key features:

“AirControl is a powerful and intuitive web based server network management application which allows operators to centrally manage entire networks of Ubiqutii devices.”

"Connect devices, report device status
Devices that are under “management” will periodically report runtime status to the AirControl server, which will monitor status updates."

"Firmware update
Devices that are under management can be updated from AirControl. Multiple devices can be updated as a single batch. Firmware images are uploaded by the administrator into AirControl prior to device update."

"View runtime status
The main screen allows reporting on any of the runtime attributes from the device in either the device table or the device details view. The output can be customized."

"Device Grouping
A device tree provides for easy navigation and device selection. Built-in auto-groupings categorize discovered devices by network ID (ESSID) and firmware version. The device tree can be customized by adding custom device groups (“watch lists”). These can be either static groups or dynamic groups, based on reporting criteria."

"Device activity log/history
Reporting of history for specific device in the details area, for the entire system in the log screen and for current activity with the “Live Log” popup. The main screen will also indicate in-progress activity."

"Access to UI through web
Server application with access to user interface through web browser (HTTP or HTTPS). Multiple users can access single server, no installation required on client other than the web browser. Broad platform support."

Currently it works via software that you download and run from your Windows/Linux/Mac machine but Ubiquiti are in the process of working on a Web Based feature (in Beta already) which will make things a lot simpler. I might just decide to backup the current config/database and use the Beta version.

We already have one running @Jypels with about 50-60 devices spanning across the greater Bellville and Kuilsriver area. Why create another one? The CNAME aircontrol.ctwug.za.net is already pointing towards the server at him.

You also have a account, and it would be great if we only had one where all admins can log into to view the health of the UBNT links.

Do indeed have one. Just have to get everything up and running again incl the other services. Was really busy the last 2 weeks with getting a new company going. @Diabolix are you available after work today to get the links alligned etc?

Hi @Diabolix, if our goals are the same then I have no problem with moving over to one Server.

What I mean is, to hand some control over to area Admins with permission of site owners that allow for their devices to be added, not only monitor access.

The end goal here is education. Breaking a config here or there is not the end of the world, scheduled backups can be made and config can be ‘tagged’ prior to working. More hands = less work, there are plenty of people who are eager to learn and who want to become admins but are never afforded the opportunity to do so.

If we can come to some form of agreement then one server will run, if not then we will have to continue with the split.

Just for the record, I do not run any form of Network scans, this feature is completely disabled. I add devices that I either own, administor or where I get permission from the site owner to add so there is no rule breaking here.
