Well from a DeepSouth perspective, if I want to download the latest Debian, I don’t want to sift through search results or attempted downloads before realising it’s going to take 3 days to get it because no one has it locally. Everything on the DeepSouth hub must be local and fast. There’s also the community aspect of the hub - keeping DeepSouth conversations in the DeepSouth.
From a DeepSouth admin perspective, if someone in DeepSouth is downloading the latest Debian, why must some of his traffic consume bandwidth on our congested backbone links to other areas when there is already a fast copy of the data in DeepSouth? Same goes for uploads. You may think that every bit helps, but if a backbone link is contributing 5% to a download, and that download is consuming 30% of the backbone link, I don’t think that’s a great help overall.
From a CTWUG perspective, we need more wuggers to act as data repositories/caches in their areas. Guys like you with many TB of disk space, and active involvement in keeping content updated. If more data were transferred from local, area-specific caches, that’s less duplication over backbone links and so more bandwidth for distributing new content.
It’s more about optimisation than about isolation. DeepSouth has multiple members focused on bringing new content into the area. I assume some will also focus on sharing new content to other areas too. All of that occurs out of band of the hub. The hubs are more about keeping a cache of content. As you know, there’s no way to see “what’s new” on a hub, so distribution of new content mostly happens via that other protocol we all love.
The idea is to try draw a divide between distribution and serving/caching.
Yup, good question. DeepSouth is an easy case because our network boundary is at pmurgs. Other areas will need to decide their own boundaries based on the structure of their networks. I’ve granted exceptions to non-DeepSouth wuggers who are directly connected to pmurgs. I granted your exception because you’re connected to a direct peer via a 700m dual polarity link, AND you have a LOT of content - let’s see how that combination works out.
Look, I know you guys are propably just trying to increase the speed in your own area, and good on you for doing that, BUT…
I am not so sure about creating all these smaller seperate “communities”.
I just dread the day all these seperate communities start a war by saying one is better than the other and pretty soon each one wants to go on it’s own and blocking traffic between communities.
Where would the CTWUG community be then?
I just get the feeling that the bigger we get, the more fragmented the community is getting
I think the idea here is great, pros out weigh the cons (if any technicallly) …the best you as an individual wugger or “smaller wugging community” can do; is to lead by example, get ur links sorted, planned well and keep them well maintained and lastly poke the other wuggers and groups to do the same! This would surely lead to a much better running network for all parties involved. Lastly whats the harm in trying something new?! If it doesnt work it, doesnt work! But if it does, it means more bandwidth for more new content!
It is great to see that all wuggers are not equal. What determines a exception, is it who I know or your status in the wug community? I always used these other hubs as redundancy if the main hub was down. It now means because my area has no hub I am down if main hub are down. If restrictions should take place it should apply to all wuggers equally because that is what the constitution says! Just my ill informed opinion! And I do not agree with the action of restricting hubs but that is your perogative!
With that said, where are the guys that are connected to their area specific hubs? Not all of them are connected to the main DC hub thus my download speeds of items in queue has dramatically dropped.
Also… Just for clarity for myself as to how hubs work. With each hub having it’s own ip. Does that mean that if your ip (hub ip) is closer to me I then get greater download speeds than a hub that is further? Or does it not matter about the hubs ip but more about the connected users ip…
Anyway I just feel that this should have been a decision left up to a vote and not decided by one person. Every time we get a new leader, that one has his own ideas and wants to implement them but please don’t forget that we are a COMMUNITY as a whole and not only a DEEP SOUTH, KFN, SOUTHERN SUBURBS, etc…
Just my 2 cents and I’ll wait till my downloads finish one day lol
You are taking this out of context. The services provided over the wug are not required to be provided to everyone. If I setup a game server, can I not limit it to my friends if I want to play with only my friends? Do I have to open it to everyone? It’s my game server running on my hardware. You are more than welcome to go setup your own game server (or other service) on your hardware and invite whomever you choose or leave it open.
Regarding network traffic then yes, the constitution says that everyone will have equal access.
Speed is based on the network bandwidth capacity and the traffic flowing over the specific links. So to answer your question, your DC speed depends on the person you are downloading from and the speed of the links between you and how many other users traffic is also going over those links.
Nothing has changed. Aragon has implemented no new policy here. This has always been how the wug is run. Aragon has just decided that the specific hub he runs which was ment for the DeepSouth has attracted far too many users from other areas of the wug now and is not serving it’s original purpose any more so he’s changed his personal hubs access policy to bring it back in line with the hubs original purpose.
I know the helderberg area which you are in used to have it’s own hub as well, but it seems it is not running any more.
If it was up to me, I would only allow one central hub around the whole WUG.
I have come across numerous occasions where users close to me are connected to area hub’s instead of the central hub. This is due to the main hub having registrations and rules. The user then searches for a linux distro on the area hub which only one person in the area hub has. While me being close to him has the file as well, but now he is downloading it from a source that’s about 20 hops away. This results in unnecessary traffic across all those links, and contributes to the congested back bones the WUG has. It then feels like wuggers that are spending their time on weekends and weekdays after work are wasting their time in providing better links or are we just going to keep on wasting bandwidth?
I am all for testing hub’s playing around with it, don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against this, but then keep it to your area. Don’t announce it, don’t advertise it on the WIKI…
Maybe I am thinking from a network administrator point here, but as a network admin on the WUG… Isn’t this our job to keep everything clean and as fast as possible?
Perhaps then it would be better if each area had their own hub, choosing whether to make it public or not but ultimately all users from all areas should be (forced) connected to Main DC. Should Main DC be off, then all hubs can be made available as a temp solution, after which users can then be kicked from other area hubs should Main DC go back online. It is a difficult pill to swallow but I for one respect your decisions and hope we can improve on the current ‘hub system’ we have.
The more likely scenario is that your download speeds have dropped because the Helderberg area (in fact) has a lack of people maintaining it.
Democracy is not just about voting. It’s about doing as well. You think the WUG materialised because some jocks voted it into existence? Go exercise your democracy and improve the Helderberg area instead of imposing an ignorance fuelled sense of entitlement on others. Maybe that will help you understand the technical relevance of keeping the DeepSouth hub restricted to DeepSouth users - evidently the discussion here hasn’t.
The DeepSouth hub’s policies will remain until someone can present a strong technical argument for why it should change. Discussions have digressed too far from what was only meant to be a notice. Kindly continue in the Jolly Roger as this thread is now closed.
