So I have and old cream-coloured Iburst Modem laying at home that I don’t need, so off I went to gumtee to try flog it.
Strange thing is that I’ve had over ten Nigerians, mostly from parklands, call, sms and email me about this modem.
At first I thought they are just running cheap scams, as they we’re trying very hard to get my address out of me, but some of them sounded like they were genuinly interested in the modem, asking if it is out-of-contract/prepaid.
So now, being my suspicous self, I’m suspecting there must be some other use for this modem that I’m aware of, that is popular amongst the shady-dealings-crowd. Maybe it’s possible to tamper with these modems, as I’ve heard people do with dstv decoders to get an illegal contract-free connection for instance.
Am I being a skeptical prick, or has anyone heard any talk of dodgy Iburst modem tricks such as I suspect?
All I really want to know, is if it’s safe to try sell the damn thing without bringing about any bodily harm, loss of personal belongings, or any other sort of trouble what-so-ever to myself?
There is an underground market for them…a while back several supermarkets like 7/11 was plagued by thefts of the Lotto wireless modems.Apparently got something to do with all these Nigerian phone/email scams…not sure how but the modems are used mostly for that purpose…
I don’t know how an iBurst modem works. Quite frankly I don’t want to either
But here’s a thought. Let’s say those devices use MAC address only authentication. If that’s the case, they’ve probably got some tool that allows them to spoof MAC address, thereby allowing them to duplicate some other person’s account with the poor person ending up with a very large bill at the end of the month.
