Letter to CTWUG - Scoop Purchasing

Dear Member,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of the
WUG thus far. By purchasing your WUG kit from preferred suppliers like
Scoop Distribution, you are helping CTWUG expand without even trying!
Scoop Distribution currently gives us a 10% rebate on all purchases made on
the CTWUG account, with the provision that the purchase is for equipment to
be used on the WUG network. As you know, our goal to expand and improve our
existing network remains a priority. For us to achieve this, we rely on
the support of our preferred suppliers (like Scoop Distribution). We have
been advised that our members are making purchases on the WUG account for
their personal or business use. Though we appreciate your loyalty to the
WUG and your effort to allow us the highest rebate possible, we do not
support abusing this system.

We kindly request that if you have a business that you require networking
equipment for, to please register your company with Scoop. It is a quick
and easy process which will allow your personal details to be reflected on
all your paperwork, making warranties much easier for them to track when a
faulty item is returned. On the WUG you have to retain a copy of your
invoice as there are multiple users. Having your own account for personal
or business use, also makes tracking an invoice much easier should you no

Which types of purchases are regarded as “personal use”?

My router/switch recently died on me. So my home network was down ,wug equipment on roof was subsequently disconnected from home network.
I bought a router and have previously bought 3 switches and other routers. Without this hardware many devices in the house will not be able to access the wug or house network.

Or is the rule as simple as everything on the roof is Wug and everything inside the house is personal?

I think if you’re using it for yourself it’s ok, if you’re going to sell it - not so much.

I just enquired about it when I picked up a 8 port gigabit switch (that is wugable, by the way)

If you need to buy something that is not deemed as for wug use I suppose you can ask Comms if they agree.

As Sselmrah and Pilgrim have shown… anything directly related to your wug link is ok.

The exact terms were not explained by Scoop so if you plan on making a purchase, enquire if it can be bought on the wug account when sending request.

Such like PBX’s/Fibre switches and anything that has no place in CTWUG will not be allowed but again if Scoop do find a problem with the order, I’m sure they will let you know. In the end they the ones receiving the PO’s so it’s really up to them to decide whats in and whats out… we just merely the messengers.

As for the link, that was provided to us by Scoop, and I am taking a wild guess and saying that their recent web upgrade is the reason it no longer works.

The letter clearly states: “our members are making purchases on the WUG account for
their personal or business use.”

So my first thought was that Sselmrah’s statement “I think if you’re using it for yourself it’s ok” is incorrect.

But i’d then rather just enquire next time I send a request for a purchase of a wireless/wired router/switch or for my local network.

I just don’t like feeling like I’m getting a slap on the wrist and I don’t have clear guidelines as to not step over the line again.

Hi guys

There are no clear guidelines here. The basic rule of thumb is… if you think ‘I shouldn’t be buying this on the WUG account’, then you probably should open your own account.

Scoop are happy for you to purchase anything to do with the WUG and your home network from them and we want to avoid having to narrow it down to specific products so if you are unsure, you are more than welcome to ask the sales team at Scoop - they are always more than happy to assist you.
