Mars High Site is currently offline. The site was switched off by the Building Managers in an effort to get our attention. We have been notified to update all of our contact details with them as well as schedule a meeting concerning a monthly rental fee for the site (which we are trying our best to avoid).
The @Committee have sent an e-mail to them pleading our case and we hope that the site will come back online tomorrow, we also hope that they are not going to start charging us rent, if this is the case the site will sadly have to be taken down.
Once we have more feedback I will post an update here.
Losing mars would be tragic. feels like not too long ago we climbed that rickety “almost fastened to the wall” ladder. overhauling the high site for the “new” tri-mast. and the beers we shared afterwards. the good old days when wug was still family.
i can also remember having to go back up that tower to rust proof the structure… blinded by night and in the middle of a rain storm with howling winds. that particular hammerite covered brush is still stuck to the inside of my back pack, if im not mistaken. what a remarkably fun night that turned out to be.
Heavy Days . . . Lets hope for the best . . . First Load shedding . . . Then Water shedding . . . Now WUG shedding . . . What is Cape Town coming to . . .
Fingers, toes and everything else crossed that this too will pass soon . . . with a favorable outcome for CTWug . . .
This almost feels like a blue Monday… We have always done things to that site on our own cost, the shielded ladder CTWUG provided and installed, the new ladder into the small building CTWUG sponsored. Is this a new body corp?
i dont understand how the wug has always succeeded at working around other APs and frequencies, yet WISPs cant get it right when running 802.11b (because they dont need throughput) through a 2 watt amp into a giant ass sector, so they then “claim interference” and bad mouth anyone remotely near their frequency…
does anyone know which isp? i would love to park near one of their high sites with kali and a 2000mw Alfa dongle and MANUALLY retype “aireplay-ng deauth” into a console, out of sheer pettiness!
I called the person in charge of the roof at Mars and requested that they restore power to our equipment until an agreement is made, to which they agreed and the site came back online a few minutes ago.
They are meeting with the Trustees in next week to discuss things further. I wouldn’t get too excited about this, they are more than likely going to start charging rent for the site, we just don’t know much or how they will structure it. We will more than likely be in a meeting with them in the next weeks to come.
We also raised all the contributions that CTWUG volunteers made to the site including ladders, repairs to platform, boarding etc. Hopefully they take that into account.
Who will do the admin work making sure everyone pays
If someone leaves mars then do we up the price per person
If they don’t pay does the committee pay for them
At the end of the day if we need to pay a monthly fee it would be best to find alternative sites. If we pay for one site other sites could expect the same and ctwug just don’t have that kind of budget.
If Mars needs to be taken down, can the equipment not perhaps just be relocated to another high building nearby? There are atleast another 2 nearby? Or are they not suitable. (with relevant permission and planning ofcourse)
