Being very new here I am a bit hesitant to make a suggestion or pass comment, but here goes. I am one of the clients on Saturn and as far as my very limited knowledge goes this is currently a site with SISO sectors. I would like to see how we can get a project going for donations to get the sectors on this high site upgraded. I do understand that financing project page, but first want to test the waters, whether others think this is worthwhile before doing paperwork etc.
I don’t know a lot about Saturn (and maybe that should be my starting point) but it seems that back haul is ok, it is only the sectors that is currently the bottleneck. I could be completely wrong however. So I looked at that scary finance form and got stuck with what is the current equipment installed on the site. Also a bit lost with what exactly would be needed to upgrade the sectors on the site. Although reading thru some of the other sector upgrade threads it would seem that the items would be something like this:
Currently Saturn is running three 90 degree sectors with Mikrotik 5GHz Metal units.
I will start to put this upgrade process on the roll with the committee and see when we can start with the fundraising initiative. That would obviously require all Saturn clients to pitch in to make this happen.
Will be recommending the following kit, which means we can move to two sectors instead of three.
That upgrade could still be fresh in the mind of the people who forked out money to do the upgrades their side, would it be fair if someone got a groove and now has to get a mimo kit worth over 3K? I of course don’t know what equipment the clients did get.
To prepare for the future please try and get MIMO kit as this is where CTWUG is heading to.
P.S: SXT’s <1km
Maybe we should contact the clients and hear how they feel about the upgrade and what current equipment they do have.
As per CTwug rules
3 N card capable sectors can host a maximum of 27 client
2 MIMO (also N card but dualpole) are allowed to host a maximum of 24 cliients
Which ever way we decide to go I think we should keep it 3 sectors and maybe ask the committee to fully fund the third sector.
Taking into consideration that I have absolutely no idea what the client sync rates or transfer speeds are, maybe some more food for thought (the experts need to correct me where I go wrong here please):
If the feeds to the HS is not capable of supplying more than the current combined feed to the clients, I would think it to be pointless to switch to Dual Pol on the sectors. There may be a significant increase in the throughput and sync rates between the client and HS with sector upgrades, but the Backbones to the HS may have been the issue to start with.
Example 1:
5 clients connect to a sector with an effective transfer rate of 5Mbps, sync ratio’s all around 150Mbps with high ccq’s. In this case total output of the sector is 25Mbps, which is way below the feed that the HS can handle. - Solution = change the sector.
Example 2:
5 clients connect to a sector with an effective transfer rate of 20Mbps, sync ratio’s all around 150Mbps with high ccq’s. In this case total output of the sector is 100Mbps, which is on par with the feed that the sector Ether1 can handle. - Solution = change sector to GB device.
Example 3:
5 clients connect to a sector with an effective transfer rate of 15Mbps, sync ratio’s all around 90Mbps with high ccq’s. In this case total output of the sector is 75Mbps, which is on par with the feed that the sector WLAN can handle. - Solution = Improve CPE alignment, thus improving sync rate.
Example 4:
5 clients connect to a sector with an effective transfer rate of 10Mbps, sync ratio’s all around 150Mbps with high ccq’s. In this case total output of the sector is 50Mbps, which is on par with the feed that the HS links can handle. - Solution = Improve HS feeds
What I found interesting though… When I joined back in 2014, roughly just after the upgrade that was mentioned occurred, I was told that I should invest in MIMO Kit as this is the vision of the CTWUG going forward. I was surprised that users not using MIMO kit was added after this on the same sector as me. Maybe I misunderstood the comment made to me then that I required MIMO, but be that as it may I am happy I went the route I did. Future proof always as much as budget will allow is my moto.
That was exactly the idea with this thread. Let’s gauge whether others feel like minded or are they happy with the way it is currently. If I am the only one that feels it is necessary and it will be too costly for the rest, then it will be a none starter. I tend to agree that most people that don’t have MIMO might not feel that they want to go this route as they will be forced to upgrade in 6 months.
In all honesty when I originally made this thread I looked at the amount of clients that was added to Saturn since my join date, and thinking they must have also been told go MIMO, I though they invested on their side already so this should be easy for them to see the advantage of supporting the sectors. Looking at it a bit closer now this is I guess not really the case.
I think for me personally I want to make some donations in my area and also I see that a lot of the Highsite sectors are being upgraded to MIMO Kit. I guess for me it is about keeping the network upgraded. If there is a project in the area for something like this guys that might want to donate to make it better, can.
Also as I mentioned above I was of the opinion that most people were on MIMO Kit already as I was told this is what I should invest in. That would have made the upgrade a lot easier as everyone would then benefit from Sector upgrades. As i then also realized this does not seem to be the case.
