Training

Aragon, can’t seem to access old recordings - wrong access privileges…
Do you know I’d there are going to be training sessions at any point?

Go into your profile here, then Permission Groups, and request access to the Active Wuggers group.

It doesn’t look like Bigmike will be able to do them, so until someone else volunteers, wuggers will need to attend an N+ or similar course with a commercial training institution.

Perhaps the Committee can look at sponsoring another paid training session soon?

I cant see why peeps in the area dont host some kind of training, I have started hosting training sessions for the guys that are interested in my area! I think there is a huge advantage with keeping these sort of things local (with in your area) so that those wuggers gain better understanding of how their network works within their area and can better (and with more confidence) help fellow wuggers and their area grow! Another big advantage of keeping these kinda things within your area, is that it actually helps build a sense of community within your area!!! Wuggers helping wuggers!!!

If Very detailed training video’s are setup and loaded on youtube or something like that then any newcomer can just go check it out and easily learn all there is to know about the wug , and if anything is still unclear they can go to IRC or something like that

Great thing about the video’s will be that it is availible 24/7 for anyone to “receive training” and training isn’t dependent on arranging dates and times etc.

I agree 100% with warlock072 on this subject.Thank you for posting this warlock072.:hail:

Great idea yes…

Also a very good idea!!! Wamoos hosts some small training vids that he created for some simple stuff , again someone from our area hosts and creates these… I understand from a point of recurring new wuggers that come onboard that doing training can become troublesome, repetitive and a pain in the butt! Here again I say why cant the guys that did the first session of training just “pay it forward” and let them host training for the new batch of wuggers! Talking from experience; you gain even more confidence in the knowledge we’ve learnt through teaching!
Another method , is to pass on the vids or have a fellow “trained” wugger to help or encourage the guy to do it himself!

The above really requires massive culture shift with in our various Areas and in wuggers themselves! I myself get pissed when people do stupid stuff on their rbs and cry for help, why not focus on empowerment of those wuggers and let them help others! Many wuggers have friends who set them up or have done so completely on their ace, why not share your n00bness with other n00bs! make a vid , make a wiki and get involved in your area! How else will your speeds improve? how else will the network grow “nicely” (correct hardware and good planning) ?!

I agree with warlock072.It would be a nice idea to have dedicated website for training material eg. CTWUG Training, with that everyone will have access to these materials from the basic to advance wifi.CTWUG is all about experimenting and helping each other. This is a nice idea from warlock072 to get different areas to help setting up some training videos and material.

This would put less pressure on some admins------> :swearing:

It would be nice to have all the training setup in one place , and everything you need can be found there.

I think lots of people are keen to help setup some training Video’s and wiki’s (there’s already a few Wiki’s)
Maybe the admins can decide on a list of training tutorials that need to be created & then people can volunteer on who will be willing to do what

Example:

  • What is CT-WUG ? (This can include FAQ’s)
  • How to create a Node on wind
  • How to arrange a test kit & testing
  • What to buy
  • Installing your kit (This can include do’s & don’ts)
  • How to help CT-WUG grow
  • Rules

(a lot of those are already setup but can be improved and this will stop noobs like me asking retarded questions on the IRC :blah:)

Legion, most of that info is already on the wiki and we still have to keep telling people the same stuff. Sure there can definitely be some improvements made on some articles, but the basic step by step is already on the CTWUG website and wiki.

I would imagine the idea with this training site is do to the more in depth, technical aspects of the wug.
We recently have a very successful training day for Bothasig guys. The problem is, it took a whole day and we only got to train 8 or 9 peeps. With a training website like this each guy should be able to go along at his own pace.

I had roughly the same results, 50% of the guys only pitched for training, this means 50% just dont give a “u know what” !!! But ja any progress is progress non the less! So far Bothasig and Mitchells Plain are the only areas I know of that have done training of some kind in recent months. Perhaps the Training site is a step in the right direction.

I know lots of the wiki sites are already up , but when I started it was very overwhelming and confusing, Most of the stuff I know now I asked two of my coworkers that have been connected to the WUG for years. and lots of people get frustrated when noobs ask retarded questions on the IRC , and also give confusing answers

a nice addition to the getting started page would be FAQ’s

Example: Mineral Oil Cooled PC | Puget Systems (Scroll down to the Frequently Asked Questions section)

  • These FAQ’s are simple and easy to understand
  • Its specific to lots of questions and directly answers them
  • It will eliminate noobs asking retarded questions (Eg. Can fish live in Mineral oil)
  • It answers most or all Questions noobs will ask

Maybe we can setup something like this page, its simple and gets down to the point, most people aren’t to worried about the technical details (we can have separate pages for the technical stuff)

I’ve started work/writing a “now that you’re connected” page: http://wiki.ctwug.za.net/Just_connected

The idea is to split this page and the current “getting started” page into 3 pages:

  • Getting Started
  • How to connect
  • Now That You’re connected…

I know the current page is overwhelming… i’ve spent a lot of time working on making it easier for people follow and I’ll be incorporating these changes soon.

The training site will be for people already connected - a how-to reference guide and an advanced how-to site. I’d like to eventually create ‘courses’ that people can complete to become ‘ctwug certified’.

That’s the plan in the long run anyway.

That would be awesome Beetle001!!! Great idea splitting the current “getting started” page. If its ok with you , could I start a “troubleshooting” page?! basic ping/traceroute/dns tests etc

Yep - sure!! I’ll talk to you on IRC now!

@Wamoos and @warlock072 do you guys still have these videos if possible could i maybe source it from you guys via DC or HFS
big please
