West Coast WUG

Hi,

Is there a West Coast Wug (Vredenberg, Velddrif etc)?

Is it possible to join the ctwug from these areas? Is there equipment that can receive and transmit that distance?

Nope, there is no WC wug. Start one :slight_smile:

You should be able to link up Vredenburg, Saldanha and Langebaan if you get nice sites in each, the distance is possible.

But getting from there to Cape Town will be a problem. 100km link is looooong. We will probably need to get about 5 sites between Cape Town and Langebaan for backbone links :slight_smile:

It is worth exploring, and doing :slight_smile:

If you want to start a WC wug I am willing to help a bit. I visit he WC about once a month.

What you will need to do is start getting members. Connect to each other for now, and grow your network. Next thing you know you have 20 or 30 people on a lekker large LAN.

Then you start pushing to the towns in the area.

So it seems that there is no West Coat WUG (WCWUG) as yet…

I find myself now living in Langebaan and to be honest I really miss the CTWUG.

So I started thinking bout creating a WUG in the west coast.

I know of an WISP that is here www.comtel.co.za and they have one site on Rondeberg which is on a private nature reserve. I know that they are using 34dbi Rocket Dishes to get bandwith from Cape Town into the west coast and they can offer 10mb lines out here.

If they can do it, then so can we

I am goining to start finding people and see if there is an interest for something like this out here

I might need some help setting some things up and getting funds for the links.

Do you guys think this is a good idea or not

Don’t give up, keep at it. I’m guessing it will take time for you to find people who would like to form a wug with you.

Still in Langebaan? I’ve got a holiday home there and was wondering if there is connection. Found any?

This is best advice for a good self learning and teaching of how these networks work and how they perform over these extreme distances… Would love to see a speed test :smiley:
