Getting ready to join CTWUG, but need a shopping list

Ok, I did, ran the test again at 329 degrees (Aimed dead at mercury according to google earth, with LOS)

Anyone?

Your best bet is to create a PTP to zahier as Ash did, or to get the double story owner interested in CTWUG so that he can be used as a relay node.

That may not be an option for me as well, from my roof I look straight into a tree

I have done another scan and again can confirm I have LOS with Sirius, using the binoculors I can see the base of Ou Kaap Se Weg and the location.(Google Earth tells me is 6.24 km)

Can anyone explain to me why I can’t buy the MikroTik 5GHz 30dBi Dish? From reading I see the test kit is only 24dbi so surely higher dbi = better connection?

Finally, I have to return the test kit on Wednesday so I’m running out of time to use it.

You are welcome to risk and buy a 30dbi dish and rb. But we cannot be held accountable if it still doesnt meet the minimum requirements in terms of signal and CCQ.

@Diesal

Don’t you have a good relationship with next door neighbor and just mount up on their wall

Completely understand that  , which leads me to believe that the gain in signal power won’t be as pronounced to push me into that sweet spot of -65 and -50 as I would like it to be?

At this point it seems like an option.

Finally, what hardware do some of the guys use to get those > 6 km links up?\

Edit: In my possession I now have RB912UAG-5HPnD-OUT, so there is an opportunity to test with a bigger dish

Good news, changing the TX Power Mode to “card rates” and setting TX Power to 25 yielded the below:

so it’s not all doom and gloom

Looks good @Diesal, considering you already have the radio card, you might as well get yourself a 30db Dish. You could also have a look on the forum classifieds, you might pick up a good 2nd Hand Dish for a good price (@Bronny).

Excellent, thanks for the help @Firestarter, @Jypels, @Lifepuzzler @Diabolix, @Ogon, @Zassie, @MDE and @spin

I’ll keep a lookout on the forums, otherwise I’ll take a drive to Montague’s Gardens when I can.

Now I’m looking forward to getting everything setup.

Not at all he must of aligned better

TX is transmitting power and when you scan transmitting is switch off and you loose your connection. Here is a test a did a few days ago before posting.

On the right I set the TX power to 30 on an high powered sxt and left to 3 which is the minimum it can go. Both scan ran for about 2 mins and there is no noticeable difference.

By accident I forgot to turn power back from 3 to default and was later(two days) told by a friend that my link to Fubar is badly broken and signal was in the 80’s which actually proofs my whole point.

100% my fault.

Anyway got the dish and it’s quite a lot larger than I expected.

My younger sister asked me if I’m putting up a new DSTV dish

Hey @Diesal, if you have perfect LoS, dont need to go high and dont plan on adding extra kit soon, those 50cm L-Shaped DSTV brackets work great, very solid.
