Possible new access point in Stellenberg

@jacktherabit

Had a chance to have a look if you can see my pole yet?

Sadly had to put in some serious overtime for a project at work this past
weekend, will get on the roof this weekend and see what is what… chances
are good i can see you.

Good news is i got my (secondhand) network cabinet yesterday that im gonna
be installing and wiring my home home network.

as for the wireless equipment… i was lucky to be given a dish and
router-board by a client who didnt need it anymore and was hoping to use
this to connect.

Its a RocketDish-5G30 with a MikroTik Netmetal 5 i think, cant seem to find
the pic of the serial numbers i took.
(its a dark grey metal case if that helps) so fundamentally im sure it
should work i think.
as for budget, well ummm what i do with R50?
lol…
as i mentioned the equipment was given to me so trying to do this as cost
saving as possible.
all i need is the pole and bracket to get the dish up and run my cable.

then the hard part starts.

@jacktherabit that kit will be perfect.

If it is indeed a netmetal 5 you should be sorted, thats high end mikrotik kit.

I quickly spoke to @Zassie, and your current kit will not work for what we are planning.

The plan is to split the link between Zassie and Solo which is currently running two Ubiquiti powerbeams. So we want to do the following: Zassie-Wabbit-Solo.

The idea was that Zassie can just turn his current powerbeam (facing towards Solo) towards you, then you purchase two powerbeams to split the link. So on your roof one powerbeam will point to Zassie and the other one will point to Solo.

Even if we didn’t do this, it would mean that you would need to purchase another 30dBi dish and netbox5 for Zassie’s side as he doesn’t have any access points.

You should be able to sell that kit for a good price though, so it should cover most of the costs.

@Zassie feel free to chime in whenever

Well now, that sux… ok… looks like im going to have to do some
planning here…

So my ideal idea would be the following.

My pole is already pretty overloaded with 2x 30dbi dishs and 2x m400 powerbeams.
There is no way i will be able to put another 30dbi dish on there.

What i would suggest is we take down the current powerbeam to solo and put it up at @jacktherabit still connecting it to solo.

Then Jack gets something like 2x litebeams (They are cheap, fast, and smaller than powerbeams)
We use those to connect to me.

Ill be interested to swop 2x 25dbi power beams for the mikrotik kit.To make this happen

@Zassie will the 2 25DBI Powerbeams from Gordon808 work??

Ill be happy to swop if will work for what we want to do.

Wow, your lucky day!

@jacktherabit I would be happy with that as it wouldn’t ā€œadd more weightā€ to my pole…

However, before you agree to anything make sure you can see my pole from your roof!

This is all hinged on you be able to see me and not having to do a test scan first!

@Gordon808 You the real MVP!

Schweet!

ok…

@Gordon808 - may i let you know on the weekend, so i can get on my roof and
have a peep for a beep? ill drop you a reply on Saturday to let you know if
we have visibility.

Keep me posted

Guys just make sure it is 2 x 25db AC powerbeams. if it aint ac it aint going to fly in Bellville :stuck_out_tongue:

also I am pretty sure @nyven would be intrested in buying the netmetal and dish from you outright if you would sell it

Sorry man.Its not ac .Ill buy the kit aswell
But @jacktherabit will be having to cough up more funds that way .
Never knew bellville area had rules wrt ac link only .

hahaha @Jypels is just being full oh siht :stuck_out_tongue:

how will he cough up more? The netmetal alone almost cost as much as 2 x 25db powerbeams (normal N models)

its not a rule, but we try to keep new links to AC else it just breaks down our area speed that we have built up over the last 2 or 3 years. I would say 95% of bellville north backbone links are AC

He didnt pay anything for the netmetal.Even if it was a basebox i would still have swopped
So nw bellville requires him to go BUY 2 x ac Powerbeams.we should be trying to keep uniformity wrt equipment requirements across all areas .i was trying to help .

there was a poll on audi and it was disscussed here on the forums that all new link must be minimum dual polarity and have a cpu of 600mhz and all areas do their own thing when it comes to equipment like mp not using sxt’s and paying for a connection and bellvile using only AC equipment for a while now but it is between them to discuss and sort out

Popcorn time
