TVs - What to do nightmare

So Purchased a 45" FHD JVC “Smart TV” from Game a week ago.

yes it is android but uncertified:
I can get dstv now working - I have an apk that makes this work on uncertified devices.
Stremio does not work, netflix does not work, showmax does not work facebook does

Here is the killer shot for me. PLAYSTORE does not work.

So I have given up and will be returning it. I need it to function atleast with play store.

So now I saw a 55 inch UHD Telefunken TV(Yes I know manufactured by the same people)
its not a smart TV can play from USB and it costs a little more.

I have been searching for a suitable TV with a budget of R4000 to R5000 and truthfully that UHD 55inch seems like the way to go as I do have a PC in the lounge and designed the lounge around having the PC hidden and this is how I have been operating for the last year anyway.

Should I just take the UHD Tv and run all my apps from the PC as I used to knowing everything will work? or do I continue searching for a TV in my budget(note I have now spent 6 days on this so definately the JVC is going back today still.

Help? Advice? What would you do?

Just a topic to discuss this on

Hi @NinJaDee

I’m no expert per say . . . But imho . . . U would be far better off just using a tv as a display for ure lounge pc . . . Modding on pc has more options available to you than than trying to get mods to work on a tv due to the propriety limitations of the hardware in a tv set . . .
U also have the additional option on a pc of a multi boot scenario that could allow u to boot into different os options upon startup - which gives u the oppurtunity to experiment a bit and try out different HTPC software without having the headache of struggling with incompatibilities with the tv hardware/firmware . . .
Perhaps a search on google could provide some more insight :

Thanks @nissan Just seems like a waste of electricity and Resources running a core i7 desktop machine to ONLY Run TV streaming apps.

I think I will be taking the 55inch UHD TV and then next month more than likely get the Xiomi Mi Box S as its google certified and everything works.

The Nvidia Shield would be first choice but unfortunately the price is insane for an android device

hello there @NinJaDee https://mybroadband.co.za/news/gadgets/312979-the-best-google-certified-android-tv-boxes-you-can-buy-in-south-africa.html here are a couple of officially supported google tv OS media players. I have the nvidia shield and there is currently nothing close in power. I am using the xiaomi mi boxes also and its great value for money. Cheers

nice @cheaptrick what did you pay for the shield?

Also I just got a call back from the store. they will be giving me the 55inch for the same price as the 45" and they will discount a MyGica for me think thats a deal?

@NinJaDee sounds like a deal. I got mine day 1 of release from USA 500 gig with remote and controller and was about R6500. They are still expensive, the new version with tegra 2 chip I think should be released end 2019.

Thanks So I returned to Game last night and they did a swap out and reduced the price of the 55inch for me. So I got the 55 inch UHD for R3800 which to me is a bargain for a TV that size.

now i am faced with another problem the GPU I am using with my PC can only display up to 1080p its an old Gtx 480 1GB that I use with a core i7 in the lounge for watching tv.

Now i need to cough up some cash for a better GPU.

Whenever I try and set the resolution to 4K the PC freezes and the screen goes blank.

So anyone want to buy the Gtx 480 from me? R250?

Lol

For 4K 60hz you need HDMI 2.0 (officially, though some seem to have gotten it working on HDMI 1.4)

That’s available from Nvidia’s 9xx series up.
Not sure about amd, but I know for a fact my R9 Fury X didn’t support HDMI 2.0, so I assume neither will the rest of the R9s.

Best bet would be from a GT1030 or RX540 upwards.
And if you want to game in 4k open your wallet. 1070 upwards.

No need to Game its litterally used to only watch TV.

So there is no Cards under the GTX 9XX series that supports 4K?

That will be a massive issue for me as I dont have more cash to splash really.

I just found this on Nvidias Website: Seems that the GTX 6XX upwards supports 4K resolution.

I do have a 1050ti in my gaming room But thats being used for gaming  so I wont use it for the lounge.

If anyone out there wants this GTX 480 come get it 6 packs are accepted as payments. I will just try and find a suitable 2nd hand GPU that supports 4K res.

It does, but only through DP (Display Port)
Check if your tv supports DP but I doubt it.

Could use a display port to HDMI converter.

Sure its only through Display port and not HDMI? you got an article I could read?

3 - 3840x2160 at 30Hz or 4096x2160 at 24Hz supported over HDMI. 4096x2160 (including 3840x2160) at 60Hz supported over Displayport. Support for 4k tiled MST displays requires 326.19 driver or later.

So it’ll do 4k but at 30hz, which is fine for watching movies only I guess

Thing is I sell a lot of GPUs, and the GTX660 is equal in price to the GT1030 in the 2nd hand market.

@Spaffy Do you think the N760 Could Run 4K over HDMI?

It has HDMI 1.4a so will do 4K @ 30Hz

https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/N760-TF-2GD5OC/Specification

I see you quoted the 2GB Version I found one thats 4GB

Same chipset, so still only 4K @ 30Hz.

You know which cards start supporting HDMI 2.0 4K 60FPS?

Looking for the oldest card I can find that will work

GTX950 probably.
GT1030 would be cheaper
