What do you think of the new forums?

Thanks @Jypels good comments.

I defintely agree with this. This is why I put the forum on forum.ctwug.za.net and not www.ctwug.za.net. You can see my basic site nav bar right at the top also points home to www.ctwug.za.net.

There is a landing page issue with this forum.

I was thinking of doing a simple wordpress blog type thing with static content and maybe a small “blog” which can become the newsletter etc. And then making it available on www.ctwug.za.net and ctwug.za.net.

Hate it… Looks like the comments sections on some or other news site or blogging site…

To elaborate, the previous Forum.php page was nicely laid out, showed what you NEEDED to see, not too much, but also does not hide anything for a quick scroll through… I don’t need to see a crappy looking circle where your avatar/face should be, as a frequent poster, or original poster… Who identifies someone by their avatar in any case? Now I need to go hover over it to see who the poster is?

And whats up with the endless scroll on the page to load more topics? It makes my browser sluggish and add no value. If I wanted to see previous posts I would search by catagory… Not by scrolling through 15241512415 posts to find the one I’m looking for? Paged set up worked pretty well if that was your cup of tea…

I tend to look at the pictures but not everyone is the same. Lot of these issues can be updated as we customise things.

Click on the blue box bottom right. You can jump to the last page top page or any other post by clicking there. Also the forum remembers where you have read to thread so it should take you to the last unread post.

I voted for “Bring the old one back” with the following reasons:

I agree with trying new and trendy things, but the old one worked better for me although it didn’t have the lets say “bling”, but that’s my opinion. :slightly_smiling:

Thanks for replying.

I’m not sure what you mean by the 3 stripes. I guess you go to your last posts? You can do the same by clicking on the username here. It takes you to the activity page for that user. Including yourself.
Unread takes you to threads that you are tracking. It starts tracking threads for you automatically if you spend lots of time reading them (or if you post in them). New takes you to new threads.

Hey spin

What I am referring to regarding the “2 stripes” is this image:

that allows you to “go to another topic list or category”.

The tracking is a great idea, but for people who don’t often come onto forums (so there wont be tracking) and want to look for specific topics or categories the list is a bit hectic. Is there maybe a home page that I am missing?

Also, is there a way to allow the newest comments of a thread to display right at the top, i.e. list comments order newest to oldest, as the newest posts are display right at the bottom on my side?

Top left icon is home ( the speech bubble).

Takes you to the front page which lists all the threads that have updates on them.

This icon also takes you home.

Take me home country roads…

Thank you for the info. :slightly_smiling:

I still see some tag issues. Will figure out how to fix them.

Hi Spin like the new forum its going to take time to get used too as in my opinion the old forum was simple and easy to use.

New forum active two days, and its been very active so far  and so is my email notifying me of replies
(isn’t this what tapatalk does notifies people). I myself also struggled getting to get use to the new forum because is just so different, but it can only get better.

It seems to me that most people who used tapatalk never really visited the old forum itself, this leads me to believe when the tapatalk plugin is working that the forum for them wont be an issue anymore.

Landing page

This is something that is needed and spin is looking into to it so please be a bit patient

Effort

I would like to thank Spin who basically took his whole leave working on the new site, and he did this to help make the whole ctwug experience from the day you join more interactive.

Interactive

If anybody has a few spare minutes log onto irc and see how many groups are there and clients logged into it. The new ctwug forum can hopefully create an environment where all wuggers are kept in the loop in what is happening in there areas.

Whatsapp groups took over.

We need to give the new forum a fair chance, its gonna take time to get it where we want it to be. Future committee and system administrator will have the choice if they want to go back to old forum or embrace the new for and improve on it.

Comments

Thank you to each and everyone for your comments please keep them coming

Looks good but takes getting used to.

How do I close topics I started?

Ja I was looking at that. Can’t find it. There is an auto close function to auto close topics with no replies after x hours. Hours sounds a bit short, but thought we could autoclose 1 month old topics? It’s set at the category level though.

One month should be fine for most topics.

Let’s add it to the classifieds only for now? Our forum is not always this active.

OK on classified added this. This is on the about page for that category as well.

EDIT: It also automatically warns people that post on old threads that they are reviving a very old thread.

Old likes and thanks are transferred to new forum. Thanks have been converted to like also. So I’m done here. Moving on to wiki.

If you dislike a post pleaae rather have a civil discussion. If it requires moderating please use the flag :checkered_flag: button.

Day 5 and after R 7985 of counselling as well as several glasses of wine I feel in a relaxed state. My retinas are beginning to heal but I must still wear dark glasses even at night. The doctors have advised me that as a precaution I should only visit the forums once a month until such time as I either lose my eyesight or am declared mentally unstable…

…again.

Lols aside. This forum is VERY different and it’s going to take some getting used to. It still looks like a lot of TLDR to me but a theme should sort that out. Any chance we can look at increasing the width of the forum posts to match the width of the Suggested Topics/Header Frame? I think that the change might help in the interim.

Otherwise good luck and keep an eye on new user participation. Us old dogs will always stick around as we already know what we love 'n hate on CTWUG. New user education and participation are the key roles of our public sites and if they achieve that better than what they have replaced then they are indeed effective.
