Hi,i am a concerned wugger…i dont know too much about routing and stuff, only what i have seen others do…But thats not the bigger half of my I hear in the meetings about the concern of the wug going backwards, and see it too.But would like to ask what is the way foward…
I am worried about that next generation of wuggers, the once that are only boyz now that we still want to introduce to the wug,the once we want to participate in the trainings and get them to understand routing and what is available to learn.
So that they can use there ideas to do and steer where we ar lacking.Maybe i dnt make alota sense, but if someone is willing to take on that challenge to take agroup of laaities, even if its once every end of the month and teach them something concerning wug ,routing and i.t…i will make it a point to attend and bring my young ones…jst saying…thx
I totally agree with you. I just started on the Wug with the intention of getting my boys involved in the learning process however, nothing much is happening on this platform.
Have none of you learnt anything on the WUG since you’ve been on it? Whats the use of teaching then?
Start in your own house and build from there.
I have learnt nothing yet. I started on the 20th of November 2020. I was so looking forward to learn from the team.
What team are u referring to sir?
I am referring to the fellow Wuggers.
U will have to learn by yourself basically…
U can always ask questions on this forum.U can do courses on www.scoop.co.za website.
Thank you very much for your advise. I will surely look at the website.
There is nothing to learn on the wug any more a couple of years back yes for sure. Nowadays there is nothing happening and users is not interested in anything these days.
HI Cornerstone
This may sound negative but active members on the wug is declining at a rapid rate. Chances of training is super slim as the wug is not what it once was. Not the fault of members but rather of the times, fibre is taking over in most areas.
Here are some numbers to proof the decline of CTWUG
OSPF Routers: 667 December 2017
OSPF Routers: 574 December 2018
OSPF Routers: 422 December 2019
OSPF Routers: 196 December 2020
We have lost 471 core routers on the network. No network active network admins to maintain weak links, so I’m afraid this number will look even worse in 2021 December.
Thank you for your input. Im learning through trail and error now. I hope that this forum will at least stay alive to assist me when im stuck.
This is pretty sad. I’ve started building my own network out with friends around the world. The thing that saddens me most is most likely to do with the fact that those joining only really did so with intentions of getting internet access (I am not sure if CTWUG provided internet access to alongside the actual 172.x.x.x network it ran as well).
But like doing networking for the sake of networking is a passion of mine, making services available to do across the world in a community run Internet that doesn’t cost anything or much to get on and having more freedom to experiment. http://deavmi.assigned.network:4444 for a partial network topology map. I have links to Brackenfell over tunnels and Russia and India and Germany. Hopefully a few Kaapstadt-ers might wanna do some interesting stuff to, I love IP routing and networking.
I’m not trying to plug but if anyone wants to plan some future projects or anything then let me know, sadly I am in Worcester but that won’t stop an L2 or L3 (GRE or whatever) tunnel from existing.
deavmi@disroot.org or #general on irc.skiqqy.xyz
I’d love to talk with the active (still active) members of CTWUG - I was never aware of the rapid decline
I even joined the desolate IRC server still up and running and there was absolutely nobody there. Is it really that bad guys? You guys are like the last hope in ZA with ragards to community-run networks that don’t have a broken website like (PTWUG or JAWUG which basically don’t exist anymore online wise)
This sounds interesting, I will try and sign up when things at work calm down towards the end of September.
As for CTWUG, it’s probably that bad, if you look at the amount of OSPF routers in the Housekeeping thread. To be honest, I don’t really care. Most individuals were very helpful and a pleasure to deal with, but then you had pricks like Razor, Wolf and Tubby. Those handful alone was my reason for leaving a little more than a year ago. Yeah I know they don’t care and will probably have some smart-ass response, but who cares.
I look forward to building an expansive network with like minded folk that love networking for the sake of networking.
Leaving a link to my other post with more links etc.
I think the main thing is a dead community is no help either. You can’t expect someone to get on and not help them in anyway.
I guess CTWUG is just doomed.
@Naruto You interested too? (Just saw you liked the post as well)
If so I will point you to this post: A sad state of affairs
My like was geared more to the 2nd paragraph of Necrolyte comment, but i wish you well in your endeavors , Kuilsriver WUG is thriving as always ,with an active admin and whatsapp group where opinions are considered with active help from all participants that strive for an optimal network.
No problem! Best of luck!
